Welcome to our November 2019 Update.

What a year!

We have changed our name to Multicultural Cumbria and moved our office to the University of Cumbria Fusehill Street Campus in Carlisle.

The University has joined forces with Multicultural Cumbria and over the next year we will be working together to engage more with students and engage and empower the community; to educate each other and improve social integration and to build confidence and understanding in different cultures and heritages on campus and in the wider community.

Below are just a few of our upcoming events to get involved it. Lets make 2020 the best year so far for Multicultural Cumbria!

International Women’s Group

Day: 1st Wednesday of every month

NEW VENUE: Calva Bar at University of Cumbria on Fusehill Street, Carlisle,  CA1 2HH

Please use the entrance opposite the convenience store on Fusehill Street, go straight ahead and turn left at the sign. There will be a blackboard outside it and Tina Borgia from Multicultural Cumbria, Adrienne Gill from Carlisle One World Centre and Nicole Cottingham from Awaz will be waiting to welcome you.  The Calva Bar is a relaxed space used for student and community gatherings and thanks to MCC’s residency at the University, we are delighted to be able to host Carlisle’s International Women’s Groups’ coffee mornings there too. Teas, coffees and biscuits will be available but you are welcome to bring along any treats or nibbles you would like to share, or you can make a small contribution to the pot if you wish.  There will also be toys and colouring in activities for any young children who come along with their parents.

We will be holding a Drop in Craft session, where anyone can come along and help us to make colourful decorations, signage or props to make Culture Bazaar 2020 the most colourful to date!  CB2020 is our 10th Anniversary so we want to make an extra special impact - we’d like to show our commitment to embracing the world we live in and respecting the environment by creating some of the decorations out of used plastic, cardboard, materials and tins and using up unwanted paint. Materials and equipment will be provided but we welcome contributions such as clean plastic bottles, cardboard, material and excess paint, etc (please contact Tina beforehand to check storage capacity on 07925 054439).  No experience is necessary - just enthusiasm and your ideas are very welcome! Light refreshments will be available but please feel free to bring along tasty snacks to share.

Dance Carousel Project

Day: Every Wednesday

Cost:  £2.00 including Childcare

Dates:  From 6th November until 11th December 2019

Venue:  ICan Health and Fitness Centre, Lorne Street, Denton Holme, Carlisle, CA2 5DU

You will be aware that Multicultural Cumbria is in the exciting process of delivering a Dance project, a carousel of dance classes, consisting of five parts; each part a different dance style.  So far the project has successfully completed Part One: African Dance, delivered by locally relocated Nigerian lady, Joy Dale; Part Two: Contemporary Dance with Choreographer and Director of local company Dance Ahead, Zoe Gadd; and Part Three: Flamenco Dance delivered by Penrith based Spanish lady, Yolanda Marti Perez, accompanied by her 15 year old daughter, Carmen, who remarkably helped translate in the classes.

Tina Borgia, Project Coordinator says “It has all totally exceeded our expectations. I’ve had the pleasure of watching womens’ confidence grow immensely, seeing new unlikely friendships form and witnessing incredibly humbling experiences when tutors have become overwhelmed and emotional at being able to share their unique talents and culture.  There’s an ‘anything goes’ attitude in the classes, inhibitions are left outside and the women’s bond is tangible. You can’t put a price on that.”

Next week, Wednesday 6 November, is the start of Part Four: Latin Fusion led by Carlisle based Greek lady, Jenny Rapti.  Jenny also teaches Salsa classes locally, at the Calva bar at University of Cumbria but she is particularly excited to be working with Multicultural Cumbria on this project to offer women the opportunity to learn a combination of latin dance styles, including Salsa, Merengue and Bachata in this particular Latin Fusion class.

Egyptian Belly Dance will complete the project in Part Five after Christmas in the run up to Culture Bazaar 2020, with Sally Abdalla, who moved here from Egypt 3 years ago.

Now many of the women want an opportunity to show off what they have learned by performing at MCC’s Culture Bazaar. As 2020 will be MCC’s 10th Anniversary event, we will celebrate the success of the project by bringing the five dance tutors together to collaborate in choreographing an exclusive Dance Carousel blend, by weaving the five styles together to create an all inclusive performance!  If anyone would like to contact Tina with any ideas of help or support with this venture, details are given below.
